Captain Hyman Galbut Basketball Shabbaton
She Shoots, She Scores!!!
This past week seven teams from across North America came together to participate in the Captain Hyman P. Galbut second annual shabbaton right here in Miami, Florida. The tournament started on February 7th with a trip to UM to watch a Canes basketball game vs. Boston College. The night ended with a scoop of ice cream from The Frieze. All the teams return home in time to go to sleep by 12 to get a good nights rest to be back at RASGHA at 7. Thursday came a day of basketball games and surprise activities. All the teams competed in their first game Thursday morning and then continued to the beach for a picnic lunch. After the busy morning everyone was excited for the long awaited surprise activity. We load the buses with the thought of great fun. Arriving to 17th and Washington we see a big outdoor bus. To everyone’s greatest delight we embarked on Duck Tours. The craziest part was the bus turned into a boat. And as all those that went on the tour, on the count of 3 we all say, “Quack, Quack, Quack” That night every team’s second game was played. Friday held another game and then shabbous preparations. Shabbat was one of the nicest parts of the shabbaton. All the players were able to bond in a nice setting. Every team put on a play or sang a song about the city they live in and they were all very funny and entertaining. They were songs and of course food. Saturday night were the last games and the championship which was held at midnight. WYHS defended the first place trophy from Yavneh from Dallas. Your own lady warriors played YULA for third place and won!!! Sunday was the day of awards and goodbyes. Eveyone was so sad to leave, but no one can wait until next year, (hint hint robyn malek)
