Baruch Levine Concert
Thursday’s concert not only got us out of class, but it was actually kind of fun. Rabbi Wilk used his Wilk Nation connections to get Rabbi Baruch Levine, well-known composer and singer as well as long-time friend of Rav Wilk, to perform at the Hebrew Academy. Most of the student body probably thought that they were being led to some boring assembly, expecting a pleasant nap, extensive text messaging, or maybe even a little study time, but were pleased to find that the concert was really exciting. Throughout almost the entire performance, many students were singing along, clapping, and even dancing in front of the stage, which, by the way, calls into question the verity of Rabbi Shifman’s ‘apathy’ accusations of a couple weeks ago. During the concert, the student band named Svarah made a surprise appearance. The band consists of lead singer Chaim Siev, drummer Joey Hamaoui, lead guitar Jonathan Siev, bassist Mitchell Bitran, and crazy bongo/ukulele/kazoo dude Shloimie Dratler. Since there were no bass, bongos, ukuleles, or kazoos, Mitchell and Shloimie had to sit this one out. We still love you guys! Even though they only had time to play one song, Svarah was a big hit with the Hebrew Academy crowd (Just ask any of their psycho fans, usually found in the mosh pit in front of the stage). The concert was so successful that many students approached the administration with requests for more bands and more concert assemblies. There has been an overwhelming call for an encore performance by Matisyahu, but the price of another guest appearance has probably gotten a little higher since last year, owing to his newly-acquired celebrity status.
