Yom Haazmaut!

Last Tuesday was this years 6th annual Geography Bee at the Miami Elks club. There were a variety of participating students from Hebrew Academy, Ransom Everglades, Hillel, Gulliver, and Columbus. The competition was intense and the questions were challenging. The Geography increased our knowledge of the world immensely, we learned that the largest delta in Saudi Arabia isn’t Delta Airlines, and that Lake Titicaca, and Ouagadougou (don’t even try to pronounce it) are actual places. Unfortunately, our comedic answers weren’t enough to defeat the competition. Hebrew Academy received fourth place out of eight. We could not have done this without the help of Mrs. Harris, and our team captain Benji Abromowitz. This has been a learning experience for everyone. Winning isn’t everything, but we did beat Ransom!

On April 16 and 17 our beloved RASG Hebrew Academy’s boys and girls tennis teams went to the 2007 tennis districts held at the Michael Ann Russel Jewish Community Center in North Miami Beach.

Of the singles matches; Ian Shaw, Aryeh Hochner, Daniel Bitran, Andrew Hayden, and Elizabeth Katz each won their first match making themselves semi-finalists. One of the highlights of the day was the phenomenal performance by Yohan who won his singles match in the finals round – 6:3, 3:6, 6:4 – and will continue to compete in the state competition in Tallahassee.

In the doubles matches, Aryeh Hochner and Daniel Bitran played number two doubles and won their first match making it to the semi-finals. Yohan and Ian Shaw played number one doubles and won 6:1, 7:5 in the semi-finals making themselves finalists.

Overall the boys’ tennis team placed 2nd in the tennis districts of 2007. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams had a great time playing against the various schools of our district and can’t wait for next year to compete again!
